Black volcanic ironshore rock meeting clear turquoise water on a U.S. Virgin Islands coastline.

We live behind the same shutters we sell

Ironshore is a Virgin Islands company that builds two things and pays attention to both. This is who we are, why we chose that, and where the name comes from.

Why this company exists

Storm protection here usually gets sold like something off a shelf. We think it is part of the building, and it should be treated that way.

If you have been through a season on these islands, you know how it usually goes.

Panels get ordered in the spring. They turn up flat, get stacked against the wall of a garage, and stay there — because putting them up takes two people and half a day, and nobody can remember any more which panel goes on which window.

Or shutters do go up, but the track is fixed to a wall that was never going to hold it.

Or they work beautifully for two years and then jam solid, because nobody ever told the owner they need a hose run over them now and then.

None of that is the product’s fault. Every one of them is a measuring problem, a fitting problem, or a nobody-explained-it problem. We started Ironshore to fix that part.

Inside a small aluminium fabrication workshop: white extrusions racked along the wall, a chop saw on a steel bench, coiled shutter slat, and the roller door open to a green hillside.
Everything is cut and built to your measurements before it leaves the shop.

We live here too

We are not a call centre and we are not passing through. Our own houses have the same shutters on them, and we sit out the same seasons you do.

That matters more than it sounds. On an island this size you cannot hide from a bad job. We run into our customers at the grocery store and waiting for the ferry. If we fit something badly in March, we hear about it in June — and so does everybody else. That keeps us honest better than any warranty ever could.

So here is what you can expect from us.

We give you straight answers

Including when the cheaper option is the right one. We would rather make less today than sell somebody something they did not need.

We pick up the phone

If we are up a ladder when you call, we call back the same day. Not next week, and not after the season starts.

We make sure you understand it

Before we leave your property you will have opened and closed every shutter yourself. Nobody should be reading instructions for the first time with weather on the way.

We are still here next year

For a service, for a question, or for the second phase when you are ready for it. We are not going anywhere.

We only build two things — roll shutters and accordion shutters. Keeping it to two is how we can promise all of the above and mean it.

Come and see what we would do with your place

Where the name comes from

Ironshore is a real word for a real place, and every island in this chain has one.

It is the stretch of coast made of black volcanic rock — the part that faces the open Atlantic and takes the full weight of the ocean, every day, all year.

Beaches wash away. Sand moves around. The ironshore does not. It has been sitting in exactly the same place for far longer than anyone has been here to watch it.

That is what we are trying to put on your house. Not decoration. Something that simply holds.

The logo is the same idea drawn as simply as we could manage: five bars stacked inside a shield. The bars are the slats of a closed shutter. The shield is what it does.

How we work

The practical side. Four things that happen on every job, whether it is one window on a cottage or every opening in a hotel.

Two tradesmen fitting a white aluminium guide rail to a window reveal on a Caribbean house terrace, a step ladder and tool bag beside them.
The people who measure your openings are the people who come back and fit them.

We measure it ourselves

Nothing is ordered from a description, a drawing or a photograph somebody sent us. A person stands in front of every opening with a tape and writes down what is actually there.

It is built to those measurements

Cut and assembled in the shop to fit your openings, then brought to you finished. Nothing gets trimmed on a terrace to make it fit.

We anchor into what is really there

Concrete, hollow block, timber and old galvanised construction all need different fixings. We work out which you have while we are measuring, not when we turn up with a drill.

You get the paperwork

Product approval documents and a list of what went on which opening — the things your insurer and your permit office are going to ask for. Handed over without you having to chase it.

Where we work

St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. We are on all three, we know what the ferry and the barge cost in time, and we schedule around them instead of pretending they are not there.

The season opens on the first of June and closes at the end of November, and the whole territory decides at once somewhere around the middle of May. The quiet months are when the work gets done properly and unhurried, which is the argument for calling us in the winter.

Let’s measure your openings

We come out, measure every window and door, and give you a written price for each system.
